Biography

James was born about 1845.[1][2] He was the son of James Gillanders ,a farmer from Ballymacforban, County Monaghan He married Ann Jane Moore , a minor, daughter of William Moore, a farmer from Rooshy, Killevan in 1867[3][1]They had twin daughters Jane & Mary Ann in 1868.(Confirmed) and probably three more children. Ann Jane died from puerperal fever [4] when twins were four[5]

He married Martha Rowland in 1873 [6][2] [7][3].They were believed to have had 2 children .Martha also passed away following two strokes, probably from pre-eclampsia.[8]


He then married Lizzie Gillanders in 1878[9][4] They are reputed to have had eleven more children.

In 1886 three of his sons ,Robert aged 15,John Alexander aged 13 & Matthew Thomas aged 6 months all died from diphtheria within a six week period. All three deaths recorded on the same image[10][5]. He died in 1899 aged 54.His son Ross,present at his death, registered his death.[11][6] His wife Lizzie & son Joseph were the primary beneficiaries in his will [12][7]
