Biography

Arthur Gillard was born in Devon, England.

Arthur Gillard migrated from England to New Zealand.

Arthur was born 1853 Q3 at Tiverton, Devon, England. He was the third son of John Gillard and Susan Elworthy. ^{[1] [2][3]}

He emigrated to New Zealand with family on the Bombay arrived Mar 1865. (Note, the obituary gives incorrect date) ^{[4] [5]}

On 25 April 1877 at the bride's father's residence in Knox St, Hamilton, New Zealand, he married Susanna Knox, eldest daughter of John and Susan Knox. They later lived at Papatoetoe. ^{[3] [6]}

As a young man he farmed in the Waikato; later acquiring a farm in East Tamaki where he farmed successfully for 35 years. He was also a member of the Tamaki Road Board^[5]

He passed away 30 Aug 1931 age 77, at his residence on Paton Avenue, Papatoetoe. He left a widow and three daughters, with 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.^{[5] [7]}

He died about 1931 aged 77 years old. ^[8]
