George Gillespie Sr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A044799.
George Gillespe was born on Jul 22, 1751 in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. He was the fourth child of Thomas Gillespie and Naomi Thompson. George married Mary Graham (1751-1815) on Apr 18, 1771 in Rowan County, North Carolina. He died on Aug 31 1818 in Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee, United States. He is buried at the Old Hopewell Cemetery, Sumner County, Tennessee.[1]
George fought in the Revolutionary War and fought at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse and King's Mountain. He was in the North Carolina roster under General Nathanael Green. He also fought in the Battle of Cowpens. He moved to Sumner County, Tennessee. In his will, he requested that his wife Mary live on his land near Franklin, Tennessee where his son then lived. This land was on Henpeck Lane.[2]
Sometime between 1772 and 1792, he moved his family into Tennessee, where he established a claim to a government grant awarded to him for his service in the Revolutionary War. This grant is located in what is now Sumner and Williamson counties. George Gillespie built his home in Sumner County while his son, George, Jr., built his own home in Williamson County. The grant was made in 1792 but the claim in Williamson County was not registered in Franklin, Tennessee until 1807.
