Josephine Augusta "Josie" Presley (see research note re: Her Name) was born about 1865 (see research note re: Birth Date) in McDowell County, West Virginia (see research note re: Birth Location) to Henry Harman Gillespie and Saluda (Raines) Gillespie[1][2].
In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Josephine lived with her parents and three siblings in McDowell County, West Virginia[3]. In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Josephine continued to live with her parents, and now five siblings, in McDowell County, West Virginia[4].
On 23 January 1882, in McDowell County, West Virginia, Josephine married William Floyd Presley. William was born 28 June 1858 in McDowell County, Virginia to Joshua Presley and Emmarilla Dillion. This was Josephine's first marriage, but William's second marriage - the marriage record indicates he was a widower[1].
In the 1900 U. S. Federal Census, Josephine and William lived on rented farmland in Elkhorn District, McDowell County, West Virginia. Also in their household were eleven children[5].
In the 1910 U.S. Federal Census, Josephine and William lived on rented farmland in Adkin District, McDowell County, West Virginia. Also in their household were ten children[6].
In the 1920 U.S. Federal Census, Josephine and William lived on rented property in Adkin District, McDowell County, West Virginia. Six children, and one grandson (a child of daughter Ollie), were living with them[7].
Joesphine and Willam had at least seventeen children together (see research note re: Children):
Josephine was 62 years old when she passed away. She died on 28 Dec 1926 in Dearing, McDowell County, West Virginia[2]. Note that Dearing is today known as Black Wolf[47]. Josephine's Find-a-Grave memorial indicates that she is buried in Presley Cemetery located near Skygusty, McDowell County, West Virginia[48]. Note: There are some issues with the location of this cemetery as recorded within Find-a-Grave (see research note re: Burial Location).
Research Notes
Her Name
Most records indicate her first name as "Josephine", or the nickname "Josie". A small number of records use a differently spelled nickname of "Jossie".
Nearly all of the records for Josephine only use a first name, and provide no middle name. The execeptions are as follows:
Middle initial "A" - The 1870 U.S. Federal Census[3] and the marriage record of her son, James[17].
Middle name "Augusta - The delayed birth certificate of her son, Henry"[12].
Middle initial "L" - Her own death certificate, where the informant appears to be "H. J. Presley" (her son, Henry)[2], and her grave marker[48].
Birth Date
A birth record for Josephine has not yet been located. Other records provide estimates for her birth date:
About 1865 - The 1870[3], 1880[4], and 1920[7] U.S. Federal Censuses.
Note that Josephine's grave marker (perhaps a modern addition?) indicates that she was born on 27 September 1861, but the associated Find-a-Grave profile (which includes a photo of her grave marker) instead indicates she was born on 27 September 1864. There is no explanation on the Find-a-Grave profile for why the year is different than what is on the grave marker[48].
The record that was created closest to her birth was the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, which estimated that she was born in 1865.
Birth Location
A birth record for Josephine has not yet been located. Other records provide details for where Josephine was born:
Virginia - The 1870[3], 1910[6], and 1920[7] U.S. Federal Censuses indicate that she was born in Virginia.
Tazewell County, Virginia
Horsepen, Tazewell County, Virginia - Delayed birth certificate of daughter, Ida[36].
Bishop, Tazewell County, Virginia - Delayed birth certificate of daughter, Nellie[33].
West Virginia - The 1880[4] and 1900[5] U.S. Federal Censuses indicate that she was born in West Virginia.
McDowell County, West Virginia - Her own marriage record[1].
Dearing, McDowell County, West Virginia - Her own death certificate. Note that her death certificate also indicated that she was born in 1861, which was before the state of West Virginia was established in 1863. Therefore, the associated location could be interpreted as Dearing, McDowell County, Virginia[2]. Also note that Dearing is today known as Black Wolf[47].
Skygusty, McDowell County, West Virginia - Her Find-a-Grave profile[48].
Tazewell County, Virginia and McDowell County, West Virginia are adjacent to each other, so her birth location can be confidently narrowed to one of these two counties. Since the estimated birth year chosen for this profile (see previous research note re: Birth Date) is after the creation of West Virginia, it seems reasonable to indicate she was born in McDowell County, West Virginia.
Children
The 1900 U.S. Federal Census indicates that Josephine was the mother to twelve children, but only eleven were living. Those eleven living children were enumerated in Josephine and William's household in the 1900 census[5]. The twelfth child that passed away before 1900 was an unnamed child that did not survive beyond one day of life, born in 1889[19].
The 1910 U.S. Federal Census indicates that Josephine was the mother to fifteen children, but only fourteen were living[6]. These numbers, however, are not correct. In the 1910 census, they had ten children living in their household. Five of these children had been in their household in the 1900 census, therefore the other five were new children, born between the enumeration of the 1900 and 1910 censuses. Across the 1900 and 1910 censues, Josephine and William were the parents of sixteen children (eleven in their household in 1900, plus five more born between 1900 and 1910). Because of the one child that died in 1889, Josephine and William had at least seventeen children, with sixteen surviving to 1910.
Burial Location
The photo of Josephine's grave marker attached to her Find-a-Grave profile appears to show a relatively modern grave marker - one that was possibly placed well after her death. Even if the grave marker was not a modern addition, the location of this grave marker has some issues associated with it.
Josephine's Find-a-Grave memorial indicates that her grave is within Presley Cemetery located in Skygusty, McDowell County, West Virginia. There are no GPS coordinates associated with her grave. Presley Cemetery - Cemetery ID 2439255 has the following location information:
Skygusty, West Virginia, USA
Coordinates: 37.08690, -82.09500
Unfortunately, when you paste those coordinates into Google Maps, the associated location is a cemetery named Presley Cemetery, located on Presley Drive, near a town named Council in Buchanan County, Virginia - not very close to Skygusty, McDowell County, West Virginia (traveling by car, you would drive about 60 miles to get from that location to Skygusty). On 30 Jul 2023, this researcher reached out to the maintainer of Josephine's Find-a-Grave memorial and asked about the location of the cemetery and grave marker photo. The maintainer responded later that same day and shared that while they had uploaded the grave marker photo to the memorial, they had not actually taken the photo, and did not have any details for where the photo was taken.
For awareness, it is worth noting that Find-a-Grave has another cemetery named Presley Cemetery - Cemetery ID 51733 that is also positioned near Council, Buchanan County, Virginia. This second Presely Cemetery has the following location information:
Council, Virginia, USA
Coordinates: 37.08670, -82.09530
The funeral notice for Josephine's husband, William, indicates that his funeral and burial services occurred "on South Fork"[49]. This location was likely somewhere along South Fork Tug River - a stream that begins near Monson, McDowell County, West Virginia, and then flows north past Skygusty, until it joins the larger Tug Fork at Black Wolf. West Virginia route 161 parallels South Fork Tug River for its entire course.
