Biography

According to Alta Eliza Wilmot:

Jabez is presumed to have died at sea sometime between Dec 26, 1829 and May 31, 1830. He had made at least one trip to the Orient by October 1821. Loomis, Sheldon, and Bennet apparently owed him money. In April 1827, he wrote from Boston, "I have my vessel ready to go to sea, and am only waiting for a few goods from New York. I shall sail -- first to Brazil, then to the Phillipines, then to the west coast of America." His last letter was dated Dec 26, 1829 from the ship Golconda, at sea.

Jabez appears on a crew list of the Macedonian in 1820, having boarded from Payta, Peru on Dec 9.[1]

In a report on his proceedings on the coast of Chile and Peru, Captain John Downes wrote, "While at Payta I released from Prison Jabez Gillespie an American who was mate of the Whale Ship Golconda of New Bedford, but had left her at Tumbez and had been in confinement at Piura about 7 leagues from Payta."[2]

On 16 Apr 1822 Jabez Gillespie arrived in Philadelphia aboard the ship Rebecca Sims bound from Liverpool, England. Manifest declares "Jabez Gillespie two friends & bedding" (Microfilm Roll Number: M425_32).

The following from a ship passenger list. Jabez is known to have travelled to Manilla during this period; this may be a record of his return to port of New York.
