Biography

Hugh Gillespie and Katherine Aikman may NOT have been the parents of the James Gillespie who married Elizabeth Sawers. They had 2 sons named James and since naming multiple sons the same thing was uncommon by this time, likely the older one had died by 1739. That would make the younger James only about 17 in 1756 when Elizabeth Sawers was (likely) married; St. Ninians marriage records are missing for that time. However, they remain linked to James Gillespie for now until further research can be done to prove or disprove the relationship.

This was likely the Hugh Gillespie baptized 20 Dec 1701 at St. Ninians to John Gillespie and Margaret "Couslan".[1] as the name Hugh is uncommon in parish records of this time and the age fits well with a first known child born 1731. If so, he also had siblings Alexander, John and Margaret baptized at the same church.

Hugh and Katherine Aikman were probably married about 1730 based on known children.

Known children of Hugh Gillespie and Katherine Aikman baptized at St. Ninians (baptismal dates shown) were:

  1. James Gillespie 5 Oct 1731–Bef. 1739(?)[2]
  2. William Gillespie 18 Jun 1734–[3]
  3. Jennett Gillespie 25 Mar 1737–[4]
  4. James Gillespie 15 Jul 1739–[5]
  5. Margaret Gillespie 24 Feb 1744–[6]

Some unsourced family trees also give them three younger children:

  1. Euphamie Gillespie 1723– (Euphamie married David Anderson and had daughter Isobell baptized 1750 at St. Ninians but there is no proof that she is a daughter of Hugh; this may have been the 1734 daughter of John Gillespie and Isobell Steven although was on the young side)
  2. Robert Gillespie 1725– (a Robert Gillespie son of Walter and Mary Aikman was baptized 1737)
  3. Jean Gillespie 1728–

No death or burial record for Hugh Gillespie has been found yet

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hugh by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hugh:
