14 April 1807 - Hugh joined the Royal Artilillery Regiment of the British Army as a Gentleman Cadet. His regimental records note his birth date as Aug 1793.
14 Dec 1811 - 2nd Lieutenant
22 Dec 1814 - 1st Lieutenant
1 February 1819. - Placed (with others) on temporary half-pay
1 April 1819 - Rejoined as 2nd Captain
7 May 1833 - 2nd Captain
22 October 1840 - He retired on full pay
