WANATA Ship – 1442 tons Captain: Number of Passengers: 820 Deaths: 33 children, and 6 adults – 5 more died after arrival. Sailed: from Liverpool Thursday, June 10, 1852, and 97 days later Sailed into Hobson’s Bay, later renamed Port Philip Bay on Friday, September 17, 1852. The Wanata’s layout as a double-deck vessel created overcrowding and inadequate ventilation, making the ship more susceptible to the spread of contagious illness and disease. Because of typhus “fever” the Wanata was placed in quarantine for more than 2 weeks, anchored off St. Kilda, before passengers were cleared to disembark on Monday, October 4, 1852.
