Biography
Greever Martin was born in 1921. Greever Martin Gilley ... He passed away in 1992. [1] In 1937, Greever moved with his family from Wise County, VA to Kingsport, TN (Sullivan Co). They lived for a time in Highland area, After his marriage in 1943, he moved with his parents and his wife to a small rented house in the Hillcrest area. After the breakup of his marriage and the death of his father, he moved with his mother and his children out to Indian Springs, which is now a part of Blountville, TN. The family thrived there and in the Blountville area during the children's schooling. He died in Sullivan County in 1992 of lung cancer. He will be remembered by many as an excellent car mechanic, which is how he made his living. He was plagued by some chronic illnesses during his life, and he was brought down at age 71 by lung and liver cancer, which could have been related to his cigarette smoking issues. He said that he began smoking at the age of 11.
He had a beautiful handwriting, and I cherish a letter I received from him when I was out of town, and he had important things to tell me about a property deal which happened while I was away. My grief for his loss is still just under the surface, and I can hardly speak of him without weeping, even after he has been gone more than 20 years.
Greever was named after a Mr. Greever who was his father's employer in Big Stone Gap, VA, at Greever Motors.
I think that in some ways, he had a happy childhood growing up with his only brother C. B., and there are stories of their being a couple of daredevils. They both were "car guys" and got lots of enjoyment from fooling around with cars. It was in their genes.
