Biography

William was born in 1828, almost certainly to Caleb Gilley and Isabella Bynum, then of Rutherford County, Tennessee, but this researcher has yet to find a primary source naming them his parents, or any of their other children his siblings. However, he was married before children were named on the Tennessee census. A strong support for his connection to these parents is that he named his first son Caleb, and his first daughter Isabella.

William married Martha Lemmons, daughter of John Lemmons and Elizabeth Morgan, before the 1848 birth of their first child. They had at least seven children together:

  • 1848-1915: John Caleb, m. Mahalia Williams, 1891 (marriage was recorded this year, but they had children together beginning in 1870)
  • 1850-1846: Jesse N, m. 1st Lucinda Bynum, 1869 (maybe; if so, it was a teenage elopement that was annulled because they were both back in their parents' homes and single by the next census); m. 1st or 2nd, Melvina Williams, 1875; m. 2nd or 3rd, Matilda Lewis, 1897
  • 1855-1935: Nancy Isabella, m. Hardy Lewis, 1870
  • 1857->1882: James Harvey, m. Mary Ann Phillips, 1876
  • 1859->1900: Sarah L, m. James Tucker? 1876; or m. William Lewis? <1887 (at least two women have been conflated in other online trees; see profile)
  • 1861-1900: Martha Emmaline, m. Francis Winnet, 1880
  • 1863-???: William Peterson, m. 1st Mary Lewis? 1886; m. 2nd Sarah Stacey? 1895 (two men have been conflated in other online trees)

William passed away in 1863, in the midst of the US Civil War, at about 35 years of age. His burial is unknown. Martha remarried twelve years later to Thomas Smith, but did not have any more children. Her burial is also unknown.
