When Louisa Samuel Gilliam was born on June 1, 1813, in Brunswick, Virginia, her father, Samuel, was 38, and her mother, Susannah, was 30. She lost her father when she was only one year old. She married Thomas Ruffin on November 24, 1831, in her hometown. They had five children in 10 years.
