John J Gillies was born at Walcha, NSW on 10 November 1889, the son of John Gillies and Eliza Bird.
John Gillies, son of John Gillies and Eliza Bird, married Victoria Pearl White, daughter of Isaac While and Helen Grieve, at Walcha on 6 June 1917.[1].They had three children: Victoria May (Torrie) Gillies (1918-2004); Harold John Gillies (1921-1944); and Stuart Arthur Gillies (1928-1964).
John's son Pilot Office H J Gillies was a member of the crew of aircraft A16-203 that departed Hughes air force base on 3 April 1944 as part of a patrol over allied shipping in the Arafura sea. The aircraft failed to return. All five members of the crew were listed as Killed in Action.
