Biography

John Gillies was born about 1796 in the community of Ardveensih (Gaelic; Àird Mhèanais) on the island of Barra (Eilean Bharraigh) in Scotlands Outer Hebrides. [1]

He married Mary MacIntyre in the Catholic Church (St. Brendan) at Craigston (Baille na Creige) on February 10, 1825. [2]

In the census of 1841 [3] John is living with his wife and six children in the community of Glen, on Barra. Also present in the household are both his mother (Marion) and his mother-in-law (Christy MacNiel)

In the census of 1851 [4] John is still in Glen with his family. Seven children are listed as well as his sister Ann and brother Neil Gillies. Neil was apparently visiting as his wife and family are recorded back home on Mingulay. He is listed as a crofter and fisherman.

John Gillies died at Glen, after three weeks of jaundice, on December 7, 1855.
