Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Peter Gilligan was born in about 1852 in Parr, Lancashire. He was the son of Michael Gilligan and Margaret (Fagan) Gilligan. His birth was registered in the first quarter of 1852, in Prescot district.

By April 7th 1861, the family were living in Earle Street, Parr. Peter's father was a collier labourer.

By April 2nd 1871, Peter was a prisoner in Kirkdale Gaol, doing time for larceny (theft without threat of violence). According to his FamilySearch tree entry, he served a year. His occupation was chemical works labourer.

Peter married Harriet Carter in 1873, in a registrar-attended ceremony in Prescot district. Harriet already had a daughter Catherine Carter, whose birth was registered in the first quarter of 1871 in Prescot district - perhaps also Peter's daughter.

Their son John was born in about 1874 in Parr.

Their son Peter was born in about 1881 in Parr.

By April 3rd 1881, they were living in Wood Street, Parr, and Peter had work as a general labourer.

By April 5th 1891, they were at 21 Wood Street, Parr. Catherine was no longer in the household. Peter and John were employed as general labourers. Peter junior was still in school.

Peter probably died in 1897 in St Helens; his age was given as 42, which is a few years off. He is not with Harriet and Peter junior in the 1901 census. If so, then he was buried on 9 Jun 1897 in St Helens Cemetery, in an unpurchased grave.
