He was baptized on 29 May 1751 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Churchville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

He married Agnes Shields in 1796.

He died before 1806 and was probably buried in the Shields Family Cemetery or Tom's Creek Presbyterian Cemetery.

The Lookout, Dec. 16, 1916 call no. CS71 .s5545 1916 "Notable Southern Families: The Shields Family." "Jane Gilliland, mother of these eleven sons and daughters was the daughter of John GIlliland who was raised in the County of Athlone in Ireland. His wife was from Holland, and was named Hester Romar. They had three sons, Jacob, John and Peter. It will be seen that Jane Gilliland Shields named her first child "Ester, sometimes called Hester," for her own mother, Hester Romar [Gilliland].
