William Gilliland was born on 2 March 1789 in Greenbrier County, Virginia, United States, son of James Gilliland (~1749–1844) and Lydia Armstrong (1755–1817).
William and Nancy Ann Edmiston were married on 28 July 1808 in Greenbrier County.[1][2] They had the following known children:
The family were living in Mason, Mason County, Virginia in 1830. The census records an older son (b. 1801-1810) and only one of the twins, but otherwise fits the household correctly.[3]
Nancy died in about 1832 in Mason County, Virginia. William and some of the children migrated to Champaign County, Ohio. There he met and married Lydia (Lupton) Antrim on 30 April 1837.[4][5][6] In addition to his and Lydia's children from their previous marriages, they had one, or possibly two, daughters together:
Ann Gillilan (~1838– ) (Uncertain)
Virginia Rachel Gillilan (1842–1917)
Lydia had died before February 1846, when William gave permission for his seventeen-year-old stepdaughter Selina Jane Antrim to marry.[7]
In 1850, he had a farm in Linn County, Iowa. Nathan and Andrew were living there and helping on the farm. Ann, age 12, could have either been a daughter or granddaughter, and Virginia, age 8, were also in the household. [8]
William died on 21 May 1854 in Linn Township, Linn, aged 65. He was buried at Wilcox Cemetery, Fairview, Iowa.[9]
