3/29/09: See McDonnell 03-18-09 report in Professional Genealogy folder; name was from daughter Annie’s death cert info.
3/13/10: See Clark report in Prof genealogy electronic folder. See also Cowe 03-13-10 in same folder. From this, and History of Inverness County Nova Scotia by J.L. MacDougall, we see that Alexander was from Ardnamurach, Morar, Scotland. Alexander came to Nova Scotia from Scotland in 1826 and was known in Gaelic as “Mac Ian ic Alasdair” which translates as “son of John (Ian) who is son of Alasdair”. It also indicates that he married in Scotland to Ann.
4/25/10: Searched ancestry.com for Alexander Gillis and found a reference to immigration in 1826 in the “Passenger and Immigration Lists Index 1500s-1900s”. The source was “A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada Before Confederation Vol. 3”. It ordered Vol 1-4 from the Ontario Genealogical Society (ogs.on.ca) and received disk. On the disk, I found entry 565 on page 28 which referenced “From Morar, INV, s/o Ian G. To Cape Breton Is, NS, 1826; stld SW MArgaree, Inverness Co.” Reference was to the Nova Scotia Genealogist volume XIV, page 165. I am ordering this back copy.
