John Dan Gillis was born to Archibald Gillis and Catherine Nicholson on July 18th 1865 at Strathalbyn, Queens, Prince Edward Island, Canada[1][2]. The earliest census record for John lists his name Donald John Gillis[3].
He lived on Prince Edward Island until her turned eighteen, after which he briefly lived in Minnesota before moving to British Columbia in 1884. He worked as a Teaming Contractor for a year before moving to the Cariboo, where he lived for 21 years.[2].
He married Clara Collingsworth on April 14th 1898 at Ashcroft, BC[4]. While living in Ashcroft, he worked for Harvey, Bailey and Company and the local power company.[2]
He moved to Agassiz in December 1906. He purchased the Aberdeen Hotel and changed its names to the Agassiz Hotel[2].
