John was born in 1845, son of John Gillis and Christina Cameron of Mabou.
John’s first marriage produced four children, two of whom survived to adulthood, Fraser and Elizabeth. His first wife died. some years later, his second marriage[1] produced three children.
Employed as a mould maker at the Record Foundry in Moncton, he was also a valued member of the Moncton Fire Department. He made headlines for his daring exploits and the men in No. 2 Brigade thought highly of him. By the time of his death at age 57, John Gillis was a well-known and respected figure in Moncton. In the 1902 Annual Report of the Moncton Fire Department, Chief George Ackman commented on the death of his Deputy Chief. The loss of Gillis, he said, “left a vacant spot in the department and in the hearts of the men.” The chief described him as:

b) John Gillies: Who can identify the parents of John Gillies of Port Hastings, Mabou and Moncton, New Brunswick? According to records, he was born in Scotland about 1820 and died in Moncton in 1884. He first married Christina Cameron, (parentage and birth date not known) who died in Moncton ca. 1865. Subsequently, in 1869, he married Caroline Morse of Moncton, New Brunswick. John and Christina Gillies are found in Port Hastings records in 1841 when their first child, Margaret Emily, was born and in Mabou by 1848 when their son John Cameron Gillies was born. All of his children by Caroline Morse were born in Moncton, New Brunswick. John Gillies worked as a blacksmith and foreman at a local foundry in Moncton for many years as well as having served as Deputy Chief of the Fire Department of Moncton.
