He was living with three of his daughters in 1881. In 1891, he was age 88, in Lot 16, with his married daughter Theresa and unmarried Margaret. His son James H. and his wife Catherine (Sheehan) was living on a neighbouring farm.[2]
Hugh Gillis celebrated his 100th birthday in 1900, but gave 1803 on census records. In 1861 he said he was under 60. [3]
Research Notes
There were two men named Hugh Gillis in Wellington, PEI in 1881: the widower Hugh, age 78, born Scotland, [4]and Hugh, with wife Euphemia, age 54, also born Scotland.[5] The History of Wellington PEI seems to have mixed up these two Hughs. [6]
If the younger Hugh was this Hugh's son, then his parents might have married in Scotland.
His wife's death notice said they had 8 children. In 1881, Hugh was living with his married daughter Theresa, and Margery (b. 1849) and Margaret (b. 1850).
Margery, baptized 1835, was the daughter of Hugh and Ann (McDonald). [7]
