Violet’s birth record shows her full name as Violet Nora Gillis born on Jan. 30, 1910 in Haywood Co., (Roll No. B C 49 68001, Vol. 29, Page 45). She has a delayed birth certificate. On the birth index, parents are listed as Walter Gillis and Polly Ingle, pg. 45.
Violet’s obituary appeared in the Asheville Citizen Times, Asheville, NC, Feb. 29, 1996. Part of it said, “Burnsville – Violet Gillis Whitson, 86, of 66 Azalea Lane, formerly of Green Mountain, died Wednesday, February 28, 1996, at the home of a daughter. A native of Haywood Co., she was a daughter of the late Walter and Polly Ingle Gillis and the wife of Robert “Bob” Whitson, who died in 1965. She lived in Erwin, TN, and in Baltimore, MD, for many years before moving to Yancey County in 1945. She had made her home for the past 11-1/2 years with her daughter, Ruby Braithwaite and son-in-law, the late Don Braithwaite. She also was preceded in death by three sons, a grandchild, great-grandchild, three sisters and two brothers.” After it lists her surviving children and spouses, and brothers and sisters, and it says she had 28 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
