Carole (Morris) Pancake

Aunt Grace and Uncle Leon were career school teachers beginning in one-room country schools. They lived the majority of their married life in the Isabel, Edgar County, Illinois area and taught in the local schools of Paris and Brocton. They traveled a great deal.

My mother and father would visit them for a day on the way to or back from Sparta. While the adults talked, my sisters and I climbed the massive old tree in the front of their house. We could play all day in the tree and usually had to be lured down with Aunt Grace's snicker-doodles.

I continued to visit through college as I was attending Eastern IL Uni in Charleston and would need a quiet place to study for exams. Aunt Grace and Uncle Leon would pick me up and take care of me all weekend, returning me to school on Sunday. I continued to visit Aunt Grace when she lived in Paris after Uncle Leon died. I have her snicker-doodle recipe because they were always waiting for me. ~Carole Morris Pancake
