Biography

She was named Hortense but changed it to "Hauttie" herself, because she did not like her name. She told me C. L. Vaughan asked her to marry him before he married his first wife, Pearl, but she chose to stay at home to help her father raise her two younger brothers, after her mother died. He married Pearl, but lost her a few days after their daughter was born. The child also died. He asked her again, and she told me she knew if she refused him again, she would lose him forever. Her brothers were older and more able to be without her. This time she accepted! They lived in a small house (no longer standing) on the property that is now 416 Lower Cross Creek Road, Indian Mound, TN. She is buried in Seay Cemetery, Indian Mound, Stewart County, TN, beside her husband. Pearl and infant daughter are buried in the same cemetery.
