Military Service and Death

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 23 years old, married and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 29 April 1863 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was wounded in action on 18 July 1863 at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner.

He died at the General Hospital at Beaufort, South Carolina.[1][2] His Compiled Military Service Record has conflicting dates for his death. The September/October 1863 muster roll lists 27 July 1863, but the company muster out roll lists 8 September 1863.[2]

He is buried at Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina.[3][4]

Sarah Lewis applied for a pension based on his service on 27 February 1903 (application 779434). She filed her application from Pennsylvania. She apparently was unsuccessful with her application, as there is no pension certificate number on the pension index card.[5]
