Joseph was born in Piscataway, New Jersey in 1689, the son of Charles Gilman and Mary Ager. He married to Elizabeth, her surname is undiscovered, and she survived him when he died intestate in 1733. Elizabeth Gilman remarried to James Clarkson this same year and Joseph's son William married James Clarkson's daughter from a prior marriage.
