Biography

Robert was born in 1927. He is the son of Percy Gilman and Winifred Tuttle. In April of 1945, he entered the United States Navy. After receiving his honorable discharge in December 1946, he returned to Owatonna. He passed away in 2012.[1]

Obituary

"OWATONNA - Dr. Robert C. "Doc" Gilman, DDS, 84, of Owatonna, died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at Homestead Hospice House. Robert was born April 12, 1927, in Medford Township, Minnesota, the son of Percy and Winifred (Tuttle) Gilman. He moved with his family to Owatonna at a young age and here he was raised and attended school graduating from Owatonna High School in 1945. In April of 1945, he entered the United States Navy. After receiving his honorable discharge in December 1946, he returned to Owatonna. He attended the University of Minnesota where he graduated from the School of Dentistry in June of 1953.

He then began his career on Bridge Street in Owatonna sharing an office with Dr. E.J. Springmeyer. Later Doc opened his own office in his home on Elm Avenue. Doc retired in 1992.

Doc served as Troop 246 Scout Master from 1959 until 1977 and received the Order of the Arrow distinguished award for Boy Scouts of America in 1965. He was also a member of the Star in the East Masonic Lodge and served as Master in 1973. In 1979, Doc became interested in growing lilies and was involved with the Hartle-Gilman North Star Lily Society.

He is survived by his nieces Jeanenne (and Jerry) Anhorn of St. Cloud; Karol (and Paul) Christenson of Sauk Centre; Diane (and Roger) Rehman of Owatonna; four nephews Denis (and Mary Ann) Woodfill of Owatonna; Tom (and Shirley) Woodfill of Owatonna; Bill (and Judy) Gilman of Missoula, MT; and Mike (and Kathy) Gilman of Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Glen Woodfill; his brothers and sister-in-law, Gordon and Opal Gilman and Kenneth Gilman.

Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service in the church. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at 10 a.m. at The Associated Church with Dr. Ron D. Wilson officiating. Interment will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Owatonna Patient Care Fund or donor’s choice."[2]
