Biography

"FUNERAL RITES FOR MR. N. H. GILMER

"Impressive funeral services for which friends and relatives from several counties gathered to do him honor, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church for Newton H. Gilmer, 82. The officiating ministers were the Rev. H. B. Abshire, pastor of the church, the Presiding Elder, Rev. L. W. Pierce, of Tazewell, and the Rev. F. B. Lewis. Interment was in Hankins cemetery. Farmer and Co. were in charge of arrangements.

"Death came to Mr. Gilmer at 1AM on Monday, March 19th. He had a stroke on Saturday night and grew steadily worse thereafter. Although he was up and around most of the time, Mr. Gilmer's health had been gradually failing for the past two years.

"The son of Joseph B. and Caroline Virginia Dickenson Gilmer, he was born in Hansonville in 1857 and lived there during his youth. In 1880 he was graduated from Emory and Henry College with high honors and in the fall continued his education doing post-graduate work at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. There he became a charter member of the Greek letter fraternity Kappa Sigma.

"Mr. Gilmer elected teaching as his profession and held positions in Russell County for years. Later he went to Buchanan County to become the first principal of the first high school in the county, located in Grundy. While living in Buchanan County, he later served as cashier of the bank in Grundy and at Castlewood.

"After retiring from those duties he moved his family to South Alabama where they resided until four years ago when they came to Richlands to make their home with their daughter, Mrs. Viola Ratliff and sons, James and John.

"He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Margaret Easterly Gilmer, three daughters, Mrs. Charles M. Henderson, of Winterhaven, Fla., Mrs. Viola Ratliff, Miss Josephine Gilmer, and one son, Ned Gilmer, of Richlands. His eldest son, Henry F., died March 31, 1931.

"Active Pallbearers were Garland Easterly, Vance Easterly, Guy Hanson, O. B. Gilmer, Turner Gilmer, Russell Dickenson, Hatler Dickenson, and John W. Nicar. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. W. R.
