emigrated about 1735 from Ireland.

John and wife Agnes are said to have lived in Lancaster County, PA before moving to Augusta County, VA possibly November 21, 1745, the year they bought 500 acres (on both sides of Tees Creek - later known as Kerr's Creek) in what is now Rockbridge County, VA. John Gilmore, Sr. purchased land that was part of the Borden Grant in Augusta County, Virginia. Sons James and John also purchased land in Augusta County in 1746. They lived along Kerr Creek, which is located in the southern part of the Borden Grand and near what later became Botetourt County.

John became a justice of the Augusta County Court, serving until his death in 1759.

John and Agnes were both killed in the Kerr Creek Massacre in Rockbridge County in 1759.
