Graduated West Point in 1849, first in his class.
Served with distinction in the Civil War, with a medal named after him for those serving in the battle for Charleston, South Carolina in 1863.
Gen. Gilmore was instrumental in integrating his troops, including the Massachusetts colored unit commemorated by the 1989 feature film "Glory", starring Denzel Washington. In his honor, there were slaves who took the surname "Gilmore" after they were freed, and also the given name "Quincy".
Left the Army after the Civil War, having a successful career as a Civil Engineer
