JOSEPH GILSON the son of Joseph and Hepzibah GILSON was born about 1694, probably in Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts; He died after 11 June, 1760 in Groton.
Joseph was married in Groton in 1717 to Mary SHEDD, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (BOWERS) SHEDD, who was born in 1695 in Groton.
He was a farmer and was one of the earliest residents of Groton. He was with Capt. Lovell in April of 1725 in a fight with the Indians. A battle took place 8 May, 1725 at Piggwacket in Fryberg, Maine. Seven men from Groton took part in the troop; three were killed, three were wounded, and Joseph alone returned unhurt.[1]
