Biography

Richard Gilson's birth was registered in the District of Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, sometime during the January-March quarter of 1844^[1]. He was the son of Joseph Gilson and his wife Sarah Wilford, and was baptized at St Peter's church in Kirby Bellars on 2 March 1844^[2].

He grew up with his family in Kirby Bellars, as evidenced by his listing in the England Census of 1851^[3] where they are seen living in Kirby Bellars.

In the England census of 1861^[4] we find him living in the household of George Gilson (presumably a relative) in Melton Road, Asfordby, a nearby village. Just along the street, his future wife can be found, aged 13, living with her family.

Richard's marriage to Anne Thompson of Asfordby was Registered during the January-March quarter of 1868^[5] in the District of Melton Mowbray.

Richard and Anne lived out the rest of their lives in Kirby Bellars. Richard was an agricultural labourer and brazier. We see them listed in the England Censuses of 1871^[6], 1881^[7], 1891^[8], 1901^[9], and 1911^[10].

Richard died, aged 83, in Kirby Bellars on 29 March 1927^[11], and was buried in St Peter's churchyard^[12].
