Born on the old GILSTONE farm in East Pennsboro, now Middletown Twp., where he continued to reside until his father's death some time before 1801.
Notice of Marriage: Kline's Carlisle Gazette, Wednesday, April 29, 1801. Married on Thursday Evening last by the Rev. Samuel Waugh, Mr. Richard Gilson, of East Pennsboro Twp. and Miss Marth (Patzy) MCCLINTOCK, daughter of John MCCLINTOCK of Middleton Twp. [Kline's Carlisle Gazette, 29 Apr 1801]
I also have a DAR paper with the ancestor of John MCCLINTOCK, who has a daughter Martha born in 1780 who married a Richard GILSON. [Ruth Ford.]
23 Apr 1801 Sold the farm in East Pennsboro (now Silver Spring) Twp. and shortly after removed to Columbiana County, Ohio. He, his brother and brothers-in-law, all were taking advantage of Congressional land grants opened west of the Ohio River. [see Deed Book J-2, p.403, Carlisle, PA]
1800 Commissioned by Governor McKeen, Engisn of the Third Company, 116th Regiment of Pennsylvania. [the papers were in 1910 in the possession of his grandson, John Hart GILSON of Salineville. During a two week visit to his home, these and other family papers were examined by Mamie Wood from which she compiled this GILSON Genealogy. Mr. J.H. GILSON, his brother, and his sister, all of whom lived together, furnished most of the information regarding the descendants of Richard and Martha McClintock Gilson]
23 Feb 1812 The will of Susannah Goron, widow, names Martha Gilson, wife of Richard Gillson, Jr. [Abstract of Washington Co., PA Wills.]
Upon his arrival in Ohio, he settled on Yellow Creek in Madison Twp., immediately becoming one of the prominent men both in civil and religious matters.
1815 Elected Justice of the Peace [Governor Worthington's commission confirming this election, with the official or Great Seal of the State of Ohio was also lin the possession of Mr. John Hart GILSON, of Salineville, in 1910.]
13 Nov 1822 Received a patent from the U. S. Govn. for a tract of land in Wayne, now a part of Washington Twp, and it was upon this farm that he resided until his death. It was situated about three miles from Salineville. The county elections for Washington Twp. were held at "Squire Gilson's" [Mack's Hist. of Columbiana Co., OH, p.24]
He was one of the five ruling elders elected upon the organization of Bethel Presbyterian Church, 1821, which was a ranch of the Yellow Creek Church in Madison Twp.
1845 Died, age 71. He left a will.
