Biography

Behethland Gilson was born about 1666, the daughter of Maj. Andrew Gilson and Behethland Bernard.[1] On 27 Sep 1667, when Behethland was a year old, a patent for 1,050 acres on the south side of the Rappahannock River was granted to her.[2] In 1670, the same lands were granted to her brother, Thomas Gilson, as "lapsed from Behethland." And 1705, the land was again granted, this time to Augustine Smith as "lapsed from T. Gilson". In 1728, Behethland's daughter, Elizabeth conveyed to her son and heir, Willoughby Storke, the land "first granted to me by mother Behethlem Gilson, by patent, 1667, which land the said Behethlem Gilson by name of Behethlem Starke [Storke] devised to me by her last will, 1693." (Westmoreland Deeds, v. 8-1, p. 301).[3] In 1729, Willoughby settled a plantation on the land, for which a suit was later brought against him. As Smith (or the lessor, as holder of Smith's title), had paid the quit rents "from the time of the grant", the court held that the plaintiff (Armistead) was "entitled to the land" in 1735.[4][5]

About 1685 Behethland married Nehemiah Storke.[6]

Behethland and Nehemiah had two children:[2]

  1. Elizabeth Storke (1687-1759), m. 1) Thomas Newton, 2) Col. Samuel Oldham
  2. William Storke (1690- ), m. Elizabeth Hart

Their son William Storke and his cousin Dade Massey were the "sole legatees" of their grandmother, Behethland (Bernard) Gilson's will; written 20 Aug 1716 and proven 30 Mar 1720 in Westmoreland County, leaving "one silver quart tankard to my grandson Dade Massey and the remainder of my estate to my grandson, William Storke."[7]

Nehemiah died in 1693, leaving a will naming his wife, Behethland, as his executrix; however, she died before his will could be probated. The executors of Behethland's will, Andrew Gilson and Thomas Gilson (Behethland's brothers), were granted the administration of Nehemiah's will and both wills were proven on 29 Nov 1693 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.[2][3]
