Research Note

"Gilson / Matthews Line

The elder David Gilson (grandfather of the David who migrated to Illinois), was the son of Samuel Gilson who lived in Orange County, North Carolina. This Samuel and David fought in the American Revolution in the same North Carolina Troop and they fought at Valley Forge. Revolutionary War Records confirm this. The elder Samuel Gilson died about 1878 in North Carolina. Land records show that the widow Gilson was shown on land that was abutted by David Gilson and William Gilson. When David Gilson sold his land he and his wife Elce (or Alyce) signed the Bill of Sale and it was witnessed by William Gilson and his wife Mary Margarget Gilson and Andrew McBroom. William, who was a younger son of Samuel Gilson (senior) was married in Orange County, N.C. to Mary Margaret McBroom (Daughter of Andrew McBroom). The McBrooms and Gilson were neighbors and could have migraged into North Carolina at the same time. If so then the Gilson were from Pennyslavania as this is where the McBrooms lived before migrating to North Carolina. Or the Gilsons could have come from Virginia.

William Gilson and wife Mary Margaret McBroom Gilson moved from Orange Co. NC to southwestern Virginia and then into Russ County, Indiana by the early 1800s. Their children were: Isabel, Samuel, Jane, Andrew, David, William, Daniel, John, & Francis Gilson....I forgot to mention that DNA matches show a genetic relationship between myself, my sister and other descendants of David Gilson, Sr. And descendants of William Gilson and Mary Margaret McBroom who live in Indiana and Iowa."
