Lewis A. Ginder was given the names of his two grandfathers, Lewis Ginder and Augustus Eck.
He was a gymnastics coach for 41 years, head football and basketball coach for 17 years and track coach for 22 years at Lehighton High School, Carbon, Pennsylvania. He retired in 1969.
He coached 11 state championship gymnastic teams, one of which gained national recognition. His championship reign extended from 1930 to 1940.
Interested in the youth of the area, he and his wife operated a summer day camp for 21 years known as Camp Chickawauki, located in Franklin Township, Carbon, Pennsylvania.
He was chairman of the Carbon County Recreation Authority of which he was a member since its inception about 1965 and was a guiding influence in the creation of the Mauch Chunk Lake Park.
He graduated from what is now East Stroudsburg University in 1926. He began his teaching and coaching career at Edison Junior High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
He was the first Red Cross Water Safety instructor in the Lehighton area and received the American Red Cross Certificate of Appreciation. Cited by many organizations, he received the American Legion Distinguished Service Award and the AmVets Service Award, both in 1956, and the National Recreation Service Award.
He was a member of Zion UCC Church in Lehighton, Carbon, Pennsylvania.
