Biography

Fruma Basbron was born about 1848 to Avraham Tzvi and unknown mother in Kishinev.[1]

Fannie emigrated from Kishinev to the United States of America, arriving in New York City, New York in 1889.

Fruma adopted the name Francis, but she was commonly referred to by her nickname, Fannie.

Fannie died 4 February 1919 in Manhattan, New York and is buried at Mount Zion Cemetery in Maspeth, Queens, New York.[2]

Life and Times

Etymology

European Jews had more than one name based on the region where they lived and the languages the spoke. Most often, they would have their legal Hebrew name, their secular Yiddish name, and names based on terms of endearment or diminutives. If they emigrated, they adopted more names. It was not unheard of for some Jews to have as many as 35 given names.[3]

Fruma (פרוּמָא) is a legal Hebrew name meaning pious.[3][4]

Francis is the American vernacular name adopted by Fruma whereas Fannie is the American vernacular nickname of Frances.[3][4]

Traditionally, Francis, is the English male spelling of the name, whereas, the female spelling is Frances. Though there is some overlap where "i" is used for girls and "e" is used for boys.[4][5]
