Four years later he was made pro-Chancellor of the Diocese and held that position until 1954 when he was assigned pastor of Saints Peter and Paul parish in Clay Center where he supervised the building of a new parish hall and enlargement of the church. In 1959, he was appointed as the first pastor of St. Mary Queen of the Universe in Salina, where he was instrumental in enlarging the St. Mary’s grade school and took part in the building of the inter-parochial high school while also serving as Vicar General from 1959-1983.
Monsignor Girard visited Rome and attended some sessions of the Second Vatican Council. From 1967 until his retirement in 1995, he served several churches and held other distinguished roles such as Vicar General, serving on the Diocesan Board of Consultors, membership on the Priest’s Senate, the Diocesan Pastoral Council, and the Consultive Board of Marymount College in Salina. He died January 5, 2005, and his Mass of Christian Burial was held on January 10, 2005, at the St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in Salina, Kansas. He is interred at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Salina Kansas.
Monsignor Girard was my grandmother's cousin, and even I met one of his brothers. I'm aware because of cousins who were fortunate enough to meet him of how all of our Girards are extremely proud of this shining star in our ancestry history.
