Biography

Jonathan "John" Girling was born in 1840 in Brampton, Suffolk, England to Thomas Girling and Amelia (Philpot) Girling. His birth was registered in Blything, Suffolk in the second quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Philpot.^[1] He was christened on 4 Jul 1841.^[2]

In 1841 John Girling (age 1) lived at Branph Dog in Brampton with his father James [Thomas?] (45-49), mother Amelia (40-44), and nine older siblings: Robert (15-19), Richd (13), Anne (11), Saml (10), George (9), Thomas (7), Henry (5), Elizabeth (3), Mary (2), and John (1).^[3]

In 1851 John Girling (age 10) lived in Brampton with his father Thomas (50, Ag Lab), mother Emelia (48), and six siblings: Henry (15), Elizabeth (13), Mary (12), David (9), Maria (7), and Sarah (3).^[4]

In 1861 John Girling (age 21) lived in Brampton as a [farm] servant in the household of Joseph Gibson.^[5]

John Girling married Margaret Clapham in 1869. The marriage was registered in Wangford, Suffolk in the first quarter of the year.^[6]

John and Margaret had three sons: Richard John Girling (1869-1935), Arthur Girling (1877-1923), and Frederick William Girling (1881-1881).

In 1871 John Girling (age 21[31], Agricultural Labourer) lived in Brampton with his wife Margaret (21[31]), son Richard (1), and boarder Charles Butcher (2).^[7]

In 1881 John Girling (age 41, Publican & Dealer) lived at London Road in Beccles, Suffolk with his wife Margaret (41) and three sons: Richard J (11, Scholar), Arthur (3), and Frederick W (0).^[8]

John Girling passed away on 4 Aug 1882, aged 42 years. His death was registered in Wangford in the third quarter of the year.^[9] "Administration of the Personal Estate of John Girling late of Ringsfield in the County of Suffolk Gardener who died 4 August 1882 at Ringsfield was granted at Ipswich to Margaret Girling of Ringsfield Widow the Relict. Personal Estate £99 15s."^[10]
