South African War Vet Dies Thomas Girling, 77, veteran of the South African War and of the First Great War, died Tuesday in his home at 464 21st Ave. N.W. Born in England, Mr. Girling enlisted in the 1st Battalion Middlesex in1889, and left for Gibraltar two years later. He served through the South African war with the British Fusiliers, taking part in battles at Ladysmith, Mafeking, the Transvaal, Orange Free State, and Tugela Heights. He received two medals and eight bars and was discharged in August, 1902. Later he re-enlisted with the East Surreys.
