Biography

William was born c1849 based on his age at death. According to his marriage certificate he is the son of William and Helen (nee McClog) Girvin. Curiously, he is entered as "William Girvin" but the surname of his parents is entered as "Girvan". The 1881 Scotland Census indicates he was born in Ireland. According to the Victorian Death Index he is the son of William (sen.) and Mary (nee Unknown) Girvan.

He married Mary Girvan on 25 November 1870 at the Free Church Manse, Dennistoun[1]. He was 21y of age and living at 47 Green Street. He was an Iron Merchant's Labourer. His father William was a tailor. Mary died on 10 May 1918.

The marriage certificate indicates the term "Cousins German" in Mary's line after "Spinster". I had not heard of this expression until now, but apparently it means the same thing as first cousins.

He appears in the 1881 Scotland Census[2]

William Girvin, Head, Married, 31y, General Labourer in Iron Works, b Ireland
Mary Girvin, Wife, Married, 29y, No occupation, b Glasgow
William Girvin, Son, N/A, 9y, Scholar, b Glasgow
Frederick Girvin, Son, N/A, 4y, Scholar, b Glasgow
Susan Girvin, Daughter, N/A, 2y, No occupation, b Glasgow

He died in 1931[3], at his residence, 130 Main Street, Blackburn, Victoria[4].

He was buried in the Box Hill Cemetery on 25 Jun 1931[4]. Aet 78y.
