Biography

Sydney was born in 1884. He passed away in 1946.

Death

THE LATE SYDNEY WILLIAM GISSING
Death of Prominent Figure in Building Industry.
The many friends of Sydney William Gissing who died in Brisbane on September 13th. will be poorer in some of those things that really matter in life, by the passing, of one of those endearing characters that make the world a better place in which to live.
He had not reached the "allotted span"" by nearly a decade; but it should be remembered that this traditional "allotment" of years precedes the modern times of commercial intensity, imposing its toll to which has been added the strain of a long war, and to the winning of which, he contributed the life of his eldest son, Flight Sergeant Frederick William Gissing, R.A.A.F.
For a year, he had fought a losing battle manfully against the malady of the heart that supervened over these strains and shocks.
A host of friends will feel deeply for Mr. Gissing's widow and family in the loss of a devoted husband and father. They are Mrs. E. Gissing three daughters— the Misses Gwen Wyn Gissing and Mrs Garth Wilson—the second son, S. W. Gissing junior and one grand child. A sister Mrs. F. E. Walsh lives at Mosman and a brother Mr. H. E. Gissing at Wagga Wagga.
The deceased gentleman was born in Sydney on 4th. November 1884. He came to Brisbane in 1933, to take over the old-established hardware business of R. S. Exton and Co. Pty. Ltd. of which he was General Manager and Director at the time of his death. He was also Governing Director of F. W. Gissing Pty. Ltd. Newtown, Sydney, assumming that office on the death of his father. Attributes such as Sydney Gissing possessed were sure to involve him in those public and semi-public offices, when the members of them look for leaders, and so, it resulted in many honorary offices which included:
Treasurer and Director of Rotary Club, Brisbane. Church-warden St. Columbus Church of England, Clayfield; Past-President Clayfield Memorial School of Arts; Executive Member of Creche and Kindergarten Association of Queensland; Council Member Chamber of Manufactures Inc.; Past Chairman Queensland Oil and Colour Trades Pty. Ltd.; Member Lamington Lodge; Member of Historical Society of Queensland; Member of Brisbane Club; Member of Royal Queensland Golf Club; Past Treasurer: Clayfield Bowling Club. [1]
