William Bledsoe Gist was born Jan 16,1850 ,in Red Boiling Springs, Macon County, Tennessee. In 1851 or 1852, his family, including an older sister were on the Little Wabash River, in Illinois. It was here that his younger sister , Nancy Caroline was born. Shortly after she was born the parents died in an epidemic. The children were returned to Macon County,Tennessee. On November 22,1864, at age 14, William giving his age as 16, enlisted in Company A,Eight Regiment of the Tennessee Volunteers. He was discharged in good standing August 17,1866. Two years later he drove two yoke of oxen to Ripley County, Missouri. The trip took 20 days . It was here on July 15th, 1869, he married Octavia Arminta Bumpass, daughter of the Honorable Joshua Bumpass, member of the Arkansas Legislature. In 1882, the family moved to Baxter County, Arkansas. Some time after 1890 this family split up and William moved to Brighton Mill. On May 5, 1896, in Morrisville, Missiouri , William married Amira Berlow(Heady), who had three children by previous marriage. Octavia Arminta Bumpass Gist established for herself and her nine children a home in Mountain Home Arkansas where she lived until her death June 17, 1936. Beginning March 26, 1926, William recieved a monthly military pension of seventy-two dollars . William Bledsoe Gist died July1, 1935, and is buried at Brighton Methodist Church Cemetery in Polk County.

William B. Gist , 85, Brighton farmer, died at his home at 9:30 o'clock this morning. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Company A, Eighth Tennessee regiment,and was a member of the Boliver chapter,IOOF. Mr Gist was born near Nashville,Tennessee,but has lived in Polk county for the past 50 years. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 at the Brighton M.E. Church, with Reverend Frank Sherman of Walnut Grove officiating. Interment will be in Brighton Cemetery under the direction of Willard B. Erwin of Pleasant Hope. Services at the grave will be in charge of the IOOF. Surviving are seven daughters , Mrs. T.J. Moore, Morrillton, Ark, Mrs Mary Gualt, Zanoni, Mo. Mrs Sig Parks, Clarkridge, Ark., Mrs. H.G. McGuire,Brighton, and three daughters of Mountain Home, Ark, two sonsW.E. Gist of Brighton and John Gist of Deland, Florida, a sister Mrs. Nancy Shipman of Texas and a number of grand children, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
