David S. Gittings Obituary. The Aegis and Intelligencer. Bel Air MD. 28 March 1890.
Mr. David S. Gittings died suddenly, of apoplexy, on Saturday evening, March 22, at his home, Roslin, near Upper Fails, Baltimore county. Mr. Gittings was the second son of the late Dr. David S. Gittings and a brother of the late Richard J. Gittings, a prominent lawyer of Baltimore. Col. John Beale Howard, of Sherwood, was his maternal grandfather.
He was born at Roslin on the 20th of March, 1835. After completing his education he passed some time in the counting-room of his kinsman, the late Lambert Gittings, of Baltimore. In 1857 he married Miss Varina Brandon, a daughter of the late Governor Brandon, of Mississippi. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Gittings resided at Roslin. He was buried in the family lot at St. John’s Church, Kingsville, on Tuesday morning, the rector, Rev. J. W. Larmour, officiating. The pallbearers ware Garrett Brown, Edward Reynolds, Edward A. Day, S. Haven Wilson, E. F. Raphel and R. B. Crane.
Among members of the family and near friends present were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Cox, Dr. J. B. Howard Gittings, Dr. and Mrs. Lindsay, Mr. and Mrs. Marye, D. Sterett and Anna Gittings, Richard Howard and wife, Beale Howard, Frederick and Robert Tyson, Wm. P. Trimble, James Munnikbuysen and John B. Rumsey.
His wife and three sisters and a brother survive him. The latter is Dr. J. Howard Gittings, of Philadelphia. His sisters are Mrs. Mary Bryarly, of Roslin, Mrs. Lindsay, wife of Dr. Lindsay, of Baltimore, and Mrs. Joseph Cox, of Baltimore. Mr. Schulz, undertaker, of Upper Falls, had charge of the funeral arrangements. The large attendance at the funeral was an evidence of the esteem in which he was held, and he will be sadly missed by many to whom he had endeared himself by his many excellent qualities of mind and heart.
