John Givens Sr is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A132507.

John Sr. was born about 1716, in County Antrim, Ireland. He may have been a son or nephew of Samuel Givens, or possibly a son of Thomas Givens. Thomas Givens reportedly lived and died in County Antrim. Just when John and his family migrated to America has not been determined.

He has been documented as living at Rasmours Mill and Beatty's Ford, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina during the Revolutionary War.[1]

Events at the John Givens household were later outlined by a son, James, in a pension application: "General Cornwallis took up his line of march from where he had been stationed in Lincoln County, North Carolina in the winter of 1780 and his army crossed the Catawba River at Beatty's Ford, on the 22nd February 1781. It was at that place Gen Davidson was killed. The cannon and baggage wagons crossed at Beatty's ford, where my father resided. Cornwallis & his staff breakfasted in my fathers house & my father was taken prisoner & marched off. He was then 65 years of age and claimed exemption in the reason of his age that he did not belong to the army. He was told, if he did not, his sons did. He had then seven sons...who were in the service of the United States fighting her battles..." [citation needed]

John married Rebecca Brown, possible daughter of Thomas and Ruth (Allen) Brown. Note, the D.A.R. record shows her name as "Rebecca Brown Long".

The 1790 census for Mecklenburg County separately delineates John Sr. and John Jr. Enumerated with the elder John were a white male at least twenty-one years old and a white female.[citation needed] Soon afterward, John Sr. moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky.

He executed a will on 19 April 1794 and his will was admitted to probate on July 15 of the same year. [citation needed] Where he was interred has not been determined but it is assumed it was in Lincoln County, Kentucky.
