Joseph Harvel (Harvey) Givens was born on 10 Feb 1832 in North Carolina, United States.

The 1850 census indicates he was born about 1832 in Alabama.^[1] The 1860 census indicates about 1834 in North Carolina.^[2] The 1880 and 1910 census indicate about 1832 in North Carolina.^[3][4] Obituary lists North Carolina, but names city as Spartinburgh.^[5]

He was the son of Robert Givens and Rebecca Givens.^[1]

In the 1850 US census, Harvey Givens (age 18) was living in Walton, Florida, with parents Robert Givens (40) and Rebecca Givens (38), and siblings John (14), James (12) and Frances (10). He was working as a laborer.^[1]

In the 1860 US census, Joseph Givens (age 26), born North Carolina, was living in Covington, Alabama, with wife Mary S Givens (19). He was working as a teamster. He was living in household 622, with a personal estate value of 213.^[2]

In the 1880 US census, Joseph Givens (age 48), born North Carolina, was living in Lowells, Baldwin, Alabama, with wife Mary S Givens (39), and children Emmer (15), John (12), William (10) and Andrew (8). He was working as a driver.^[3]

In the 1910 US census, Joseph H Givens (age 78), born North Carolina, was living in Loxley and Roberstdale, Baldwin, Alabama. He was widowed.^[4]

"Joseph H. Givens, 83 years of age, died last Tuesday morning, Feb. 24, 1914 at 9 o'clock at the home of his son, J.D. Givens, at Millville, Fla., after suffering several days with pneumonia. Mr. Givens was born in Spartanburg, N.C. on Feb 10, 1832, but moved to Alabama in his young days and spent most of his time there until a short time before his death. The deceased is survived by three daughters, Mrs. S.E. Cooper and Mrs. Jospehine White of Robertsdale,Ala. and Mrs. A. Flemming of Atmore,Ala. and three sons,J.D. and W.R. Givens of Millville,Fla. and A.J. Givens of Harris,Fla. The remains were intered at Millville,Florida. "^[6]
