Nicholas Brown Gladding was born at his parents' home on 16 January 1792 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA. He was the son of Timothy Gladding, 1740–1808, and his wife, Anne "Nancy" (Jacobs) Gladding, 1752–1830. The couple had been married on 9 October 1766 in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island Colony, New England. [1]
Nicholas B. Gladding in the 1850 US Federal Census. Unfortunately, as too-often-happened, the Census taker named his daughter Anna E. Snow's son "Charles Gladding" as if he were her brother, not her son. Otherwise the record is correct. Anna and her husband and their children lived in the Gladding household in 1850. [2]
Nicholas Gladding and his wife had 9 known children. Five of them died before 1850; this may have contributed to her mental condition as noted on the 1850 US Census: [3]
Rebecca Y. (Wilson) Gladding passed away at 70 years old on 24 July 1864 in Providence city, Providence county, Rhode Island, USA. Her Rhode Island death record states she was the daughter of Rev. James Wilson & his wife, Mary (Hurst) Wilson. So far as is known, Rebecca was not named "Mary" and her middle initial "Y" (engraved on her tombstone) has never been explained. [4] One much later: 1906 Massachusetts record calls her "Mary Wilson" but that is most-likely due to the informant's error.
Rebecca Y. (Wilson) Gladding was buried in the family plot at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA. [6]
Nicholas Brown Gladding survived his wife's passing. On the 1870 US Census he was recorded as 77 years old, living with his 47-year-old married daughter Caroline (Gladding) Gramont, her husband and their 5 children in Providence Ward 5, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA. He was the "Head of Household" as they all lived in his house, valued at $5,000 with his personal property valued at $600 US dollars. Nicholas was called a "Retired Merchant" whilst his son-in-law: James R. Gramont, 57 years old, was a "Clerk". [7]
Ten years later, the 1880 US Census recorded Nicholas B. Gladding as an 88-year-old widower, now living with his married daughter, Mary Hurst (Gladding) Hubbard, 62, her husband Samuel Hubbard, 58, and their 2 children, Allen Hubbard: 23, and Ellen Hubbard: 22 years old. They were living in Samuel Hubbard's home in Smithfield, Providence County, Rhode Island. Samuel Hubbard was Smithfield's "Depot Master (Railroad)" whilst his father-in-law was a "Boarder" with the notation "Infirm" next to his name. [8]
Nicholas B. Gladding passed a week before his 91st birthday on 8 January 1883 at his daughter Mary's home in Smithfield, Providence, Rhode Island. [9] He was buried next to his late wife at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA. [10]
