Biography

Martha Glading was born in 1777 and baptised on 5 Mar 1777 at Ware, Hertfordshire, England. She was the daughter of Samuel Glading and Ann Shadbolt.[1]

Martha Glading married James Gregory on 25 Apr 1796 at St Mary, Ware.[2] They moved to Norwich in Norfolk where they had at least nine children: Martha Gregory (b. 1799), Elizabeth Gregory (b. 1803), James Gregory (b. 1805), Mary Ann Gregory (b. 1807), Charlotte Gregory (b. 1809), George Gregory (b. 1811), William Gregory (1813–1813), William Gregory (1814–1815), Jane Gregory (b. 1820). James worked as a weaver.

Martha's husband James died in 1836.

In the 1841 census, Martha Gregory was age 66 living at King Street, Norwich with her daughter Charlotte Lanham (30), her husband Gilbert Lanham (30), and their children Gilbert Lanham (9), Frederick Lanham (8), George Lanham (4), Charlotte Lanham (3).[3]

In the 1851 census, Martha Gregory [incorrectly listed as Martha George] was age 75 living at King Street, Norwich with her daughter Charlotte Lanham (41), her husband Gilbert Lanham (41), and their children Gilbert Lanham (19), Frederick Lanham (17), George Lanham (14), Christiana Lanham (8), Navin Lanham (4), Emma Lanham (1) and niece Charlotte Gooch (12).[4]

In the 1861 census, Martha Gregory [incorrectly listed as Martha Greeney] was age 87 living at King Street, Norwich with her daughter Charlotte Lanham (50), her husband Gilbert Lanham (54), and their children Christiane Lanham (15), Naomi Lanham (14), Emma Lanham (11), Arthur Lanham (8).[5]

Martha Gregory died in 1865 age 88 at Norwich.[6] She was buried on 15 Nov 1865 at St John de Sepulchre, Norwich.[7]
