Biography

Elizabeth Ann BODDINGTON (nee GLADMAN) was born at Bridgewater, Hobart, Tasmania. On 10 May 1835, she was christened at St Mark's Church of England, Bridgewater, along with her older brother, Thomas. Thomas was born 1833 at Greenpoint, Hobart, Tasmania.

Elizabeth, after moving from Tasmania to Victoria about 1850 with her parents, married Isaac BODDINGTON at 16 years and 3 months on 16 March 1851[1]. She signed her marriage certificate with an X, stating on the certificate that she was 18 years old. Elizabeth adopted the Christian Israelite faith, signing the register on 30 October 1859. Isaac had signed on 21 October 1859.

Elizabeth never wore anything that was not made of linen. She was a very fussy person who wore a white linen bonnet everywhere. The Christian Israelites did not cut their hair or shave. The only Christian Israelite church left in Victoria in 2006 is at 2 Spring Street, Fitzroy. They believe that you should never leave a photograph of yourself on this earth after you have died, so only one photograph is known of Elizabeth; and there is only one or two of Isaac.

Elizabeth was apparently always helping other people. She was a very good worker with a generous heart. Her family meant the world to her. Sadly, her husband, Isaac, died 60 years before she did. Her mother died 31 years before her too. Isaac and Elizabeth had 4 children, the youngest, Rhoda, being only 2 years old when her father died.

Elizabeth died in 1927[2] at the age of 92 years. She is buried at Winchelsea, Victoria.
