Biography

WILLIAM EWART GLADSTONE son of Sir John Gladstone and Ann Robertson, was born December 29, 1809 in Liverpool, England. He was baptised on 07 Feb 1810 at Saint Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England[1].

His life is described in some detail on Wikipedia.

Gladstone, who was a Liberal, served as British Prime Minister on 4 separate occasions:

  • 1868 to 1874
  • 1880 to 1885
  • 1886 to 1886
  • 1892 to 1894

Queen Victoria described him as a “half-mad firebrand” while to a large part of the British working classes he was the "Grand Old Man".

Gladstone died on May 19, 1898 from cancer, which started behind the cheekbone and spread across his body. He was buried in Westminster Abbey.
