Biography

Thomas was born 25 July 1804, the son of John Gladstone and Ann Robertson.[1]

Slavery

Upon his father's death in 1851 Thomas inherited his Baronetcy and the family estate - his father's Liverpool based firm was heavily involved in the West Indian and Guyanese sugar and cotton trades and received large amounts of compensation upon abolition. Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, Thomas sat as a Tory MP from 1830-1837 and again briefly in 1842. In Parliament he showed himself sympathetic to the West India lobby and provided his father with regular intelligence regarding the political manoeuvrings of abolitionists. [2]

He passed away in 1889, Laurencekirk, Kincardineshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.[3]
